I believe that technology is a wonderful and essential tool in today's classroom and must be fully embraced. It isn't enough to press the power button on a computer anymore, technology has gone into orbit, and as a teacher it is my job to follow it or be left behind by my students, and thus be unable to educate them in a way that best prepares them for the future. It takes extra time and effort to create projects and facilitate collaboration using technologies. It isn't lazy teaching, but it is more effective!
I think that the more involved students are in creation and use of technology and media, the more they learn and retain. It is the way that they currently communicate, in a way their second language. It adds another dimension to learning. When I was in school teachers always told us the more times we handled information, the better we would remember it, so we wrote it down, presented it to the class, etc. Having students use technology, the format they love and are familiar with, to enhance our teaching of core curriculum, accomplishes the same goal but in a new and exciting format.
